Paul’s story

Paul was diagnosed with glaucoma during a routine eye test, even though he had no symptoms or vision problems. After an initial shock, he quickly began treatment with eye drops, which has kept his condition well controlled. Finding Glaucoma UK gave him support and information, and he continues regular check-ups while encouraging family and friends to have their eyes tested.

Paul

I came across Glaucoma UK by chance, then did a proper search and registered as a member. I realised just how many people are in the same boat, and how much knowledge, experience and support is out there for people like me.

My glaucoma diagnosis came about during a routine eye test at my local optician’s. The appointment was simply to check whether my spectacle prescription had changed. I had no symptoms, no issues with my vision, no pain or discomfort. The first signs that led to a glaucoma diagnosis appeared in 2010, and I was immediately referred to an ophthalmic consultant.

It came as a surprise – a bit of a shock and quite worrying. I knew nothing about glaucoma or the potential consequences if left untreated. My mother apparently suffered from glaucoma too, but beyond being told of her diagnosis, there was no other information so, I did my own research.

Since then, I’ve encouraged close family and friends to have regular eye checks. My story and experience with glaucoma has been very positive and I recognise that I may be one of the luckier ones. Because of this, those around me haven’t been overly alarmed by the possibility of developing glaucoma themselves, but I do make sure they don’t underestimate the seriousness of the condition or ignore my advice.

Before seeing the ophthalmic consultant, I knew very little about glaucoma. It had never been on my agenda, so my early research felt a bit daunting. However, the speed of my first appointment and the immediate start of treatment was reassuring – especially having the chance to speak directly with an expert, rather than relying on Dr Google!

The impact of the diagnosis on my daily life has been minimal. I apply my eye drops every morning, and that’s it. There have been times when I’ve needed to use drops two or three times a day, which has been inconvenient, but nothing more than that. My treatment has always been through eye drops, though the specific type has changed several times over the last fifteen years as their effectiveness reduced. Thankfully, my eye pressure is now well controlled.

I came across Glaucoma UK by chance, then did a proper search and registered as a member. I realised just how many people are in the same boat, and how much knowledge, experience and support is out there for people like me.

I was also fortunate that when I was first diagnosed, I had health insurance through my employer. I was seen quickly and treated began straight away. Although I’ve been retired for some time now, I’ve continued seeing the same consultant, typically every six months. There is a cost involved, but it’s not excessive, and I see it as a personal investment in my health.
