Website accessibility

Glaucoma UK is the operating name of the International Glaucoma Association. The Glaucoma UK website is designed with the needs of people living with glaucoma in mind. Glaucoma is the name of a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve. The optic nerve transfers visual information from the eye to the brain and if it’s damaged, it can result in sight loss and even blindness. Therefore, the accessibility of our website is highly important.

We’re always working to make improvements to the accessibility and usability of our website. Our goal is to make our website as accessible and easy to use as possible.

  • We provide a range of accessibility controls in the top left of every page. They let website users change the text size and change the page colours to suit their needs.
  • We use a font that’s easy to read and write in plain English as much as possible.
  • We use text-based navigation, headings and sub-headings to make our pages easy to follow if you’re using a screen reader or another assistive technology.
  • Alt-text is provided for all images which are essential to convey essential information to understand the meaning of the current webpage, such as diagrams. When an image is decorative, no alt-text is provided which could delay screen reader users from reaching the essential information on the page.

Accessibility standards

We will continue to test and review our website as its content and the technologies used to access it change over time. The standards we test against are taken from the technical standard Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG), published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

Legacy support

Every effort is made to provide support for older browsers. However, it’s not always possible. We encourage those on legacy systems to upgrade, as this will provide the best and most secure experience when using our website.

Third party services

Sometimes we work with third parties who deliver functionality and services that we can’t perform ourselves. Wherever possible, we will work with these third parties to ensure the service they deliver is accessible and achieves conformance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA.

Making improvements

We are continuously working to make our website as accessible and easy to use as possible. We will continue to test the website as its content and the technologies used to access it change. We also encourage feedback from website users and use this to improve our website where possible.
