Glaucoma UK Fellow receives international research award

Dr Giovanni Montesano, the Glaucoma UK Pitts Crick Fellow, has been awarded an ARVO Foundation Early Career Clinician-Scientist Research Award in recognition of his outstanding work in vision research.

The award celebrates early career clinician-scientists whose research is shaping the future of eye care. It was presented by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), one of the leading organisations for vision research in the world.

Giovanni’s fellowship is funded thanks to the generosity of Glaucoma UK members and supporters, and the achievement is a powerful reminder of what our community makes possible.

The Pitts Crick Fellowship was established in our charity’s 50th anniversary year to help talented researchers build their careers. It ultimately aims to drive progress towards better prevention, treatment and care for people living with glaucoma.

Giovanni’s ambitious project seeks to develop ‘digital twins’ for glaucoma patients, bringing us one step closer to real personalised medicine.

For example, a digital twin could be used to help individual patients and their clinicians have a better understanding of what treatments they will respond best to.

Giovanni said: “The more I move forward with this project, the more grateful I am that Glaucoma UK have enabled this to happen in my career.”

Thank you to everyone who helped fund this fellowship – your support is making a real difference.
